Cultivating Universal Energy Practice #4: Purifying and Renewing the Five Yin Organs

There is extensive material related to the Chinese five element system that is beyond the scope of this book. However, it is helpful to have some awareness of this vital body of knowledge. In the classical Taoist view, your body, your energy, your emotions, and even your thoughts are connected to these five fundamental processes.

In the Taoist tradition, it is said that universal energy is stored in the three tantiens—the lower tantien, the middle tantien (chest), and the upper tantien (between the eyebrows in the vicinity of the third eye). Other storage areas include the five yin organs, the bone marrow, and the eight extraordinary meridians.

The qi is stored in the five yin organs of the body, including the liver, the heart, the spleen, the lungs, and the kidneys. Each of these five organs is associated with different elements and processes of Nature. They also have yang organ counterparts; for example, the liver is a yin organ and its counterpart, the gall bladder, is a yang organ; for the heart, the small intestine; for the spleen, the stomach; for the lungs, the large intestine; and for the kidneys, the bladder. Taken together, the Taoists view these ten organs to be the inner five gods and goddesses that make our being possible. For that reason alone, the ten inner gods and goddesses are honored daily. Remember, however, that it is only the yin organs that can actually store qi.

The essence of this practice is to visualize the associated element colors being breathed in, purifying, and then regenerating each organ system. You can then follow by toning each of the healing sounds to vibrate the appropriate organ and deepen its regeneration. The following list is the five yin and yang organ systems and their associated elements (processes)—colors and healing sounds.

• The liver and gall bladder are connected to the wood element and resonate with the color leafy green. The healing sound is pronounced “ssshhuuuw.”

• The heart and small intestine are connected to the fire element and are associated with the color fiery red. The healing sound is “hhawww.”

• The spleen/pancreas and stomach are connected to the earth element and are associated with an earthy yellow or golden-yellow color. The healing sound is “whhooo.”

• The lungs and large intestine are connected to the metal element and resonate with a white or platinum silver color. The healing sound is “seeeaaahh.”

• The kidneys and bladder are connected to the water element and are associated with the color blue-black, indigo, or even black itself, like a deep ocean. The healing sound is a nasal “sshhurrreee.”
